Dr. Claudio Montani is the Director of the Institute by CNR Presidential decree dated 25 June 2008. He was formerly the head of the Visual Computing Laboratory of ISTI. The Director of the Institute is assisted by the Advisory Committee. The committee is composed of 5 members elected by research and technology staff and 1 member elected by technical and administrative staff.

Research and development activities of the Institute are organized into five thematic areas. The Institute also provides external services on fields related to its R&D activity. The research and development activity of the Institute can be classified into 5 thematic areas: Networking Science and Technologies, Software Science and Technologies, Knowledge Science and Technologies, Visual and High Performance Computing Science and Technologies, Flight and Structural Mechanics. The research staff is organized into 15 laboratories or technology centers, each having a wide scientific and administrative autonomy; and the members of the research staff are normally involved in one or more of these units. "Curiosity driven" and independent research are also encouraged and supported. Research Laboratories pursue a well-defined set of strongly related scientific objectives. In addition to research, objectives may also cover technology development and training. The teams include permanent staff, visitors, post-doctoral fellows and doctoral students, with an average number of 10 members per Lab.
